St. Petersburg, Florida is named after St. Petersburg, Russia.
Piotr Alexevitch Dementief, who later changed his name to Peter Demens (1850-1919), was born in Russia to an upper-class family. In 1882, he immigrated to the United States and started several business ventures with varying degrees of success. As a result of his rail venture he was able to name the town on the Gulf of Mexico “St. Petersburg” after the city of his birth.

For the premier exhibition of The Florida International Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida in January 1995, the Museum put on the exhibition “Treasures of the Czars”. In six months over 600,000 visitors had come to see the Romanov treasures.
