For September 2002, we
have chosen...
The
Russian Experiment in Art
The best single volume on the Russian Avant-Garde
movement is The Russian Experiment in Art, 1863-1922, originally
written by Camilla Gray (daughter-in-law of the composer Sergei
Prokofiev), and revised by Dr. Marian Burleigh-Motley of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. It is useful for anyone looking to understand how
art is inspired by the historical climate of a period, in this
case climaxing in a burst of optimism and energy after the end
of Czarist rule.
The best collections of works from this period are featured in
the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum, both of which
we can take you to as part of your journey of Discovering
Russia. See “Destinations” for more specific
tours.
